Splotchy sunburn/self-tanning fail?

Okay, so I was at the pool for a couple of hours and as expected, my shoulders and chest burned to fire. I was already a little sunburned but when that peeled, my color remained. After I went to the pool, I decided to use my self tanner to deepen/even the color out. Of course, this is the day my sunburn decided to peel. All of my color peeled off and I have splotches of white skin on my chest and shoulders. Why did my tan disappear? (from the sun, not the self-tanner) and how can I make myself look normal? I have a wedding to go to!
